Academy Sports + Outdoors

Went here with much anticipation to check out their firearm selection. I immediately didn't like it when I saw trigger locks on the guns and the employee's asked to hold your driver's license to check out a gun. I asked if I could try the trigger on a handgun I was looking at. The employee replied "Absolutely not". Number one, I didn't like the way he said it. Secondly, I asked how they expected someone to buy a weapon if they couldn't test the trigger. He replied, "It's better than a lawsuit". So basically Academy thinks making sure a weapon is clear before allowing a customer to handle it and check it out is some sort of rocket science. Overall, bad policies, and general big box store BS.

First visit to the store since they opened and it was fantastic! Clean, well maintained, excellent staff that were very responsive and proactive. They carry good product lines and prices were actually very good. They had Columbia jackets and fleece as well as North Face jackets 50% off today. Even full priced items were better than online. And they price matched some exercise equipment. They don't price match sale prices as far as I know and I'm not sure if they price match online prices; this was a price at a local store that was cheaper that they matched. In any case I was very happy with my experience and would definitely highly recommend and we'll be shopping there again.

Two months ago I purchased a firearm for my husband here and had a fantastic experience. The staff was welcoming and helpful, and I left feeling confident in my purchase. Today, however, I came in to purchase a firearm for myself and was treated completely differently. The manager, Pam, was condescending and spoke to me in a way that felt dismissive and disrespectful. As a customer, I expect to be treated with professionalism regardless of who I’m shopping for. I left without making a purchase and chose to spend my money elsewhere. I won’t be returning, which is unfortunate considering how positive my first experience was.

Overall a good store with a wide variety of outdoor and sporting equipment. Since Dicks Sporting Goods a “Field House” now, this is now the go to place for in the area for outdoor and camping equipment. Staff were friendly and helpful. Prices are relatively competitive and in some cases cheaper than other stores selling the same stuff in the area. I’d personally would definitely come back again.

You have no idea how excited I was when I saw they were opening an Academy sports in Mishawaka. This store has something for everyone. They have great clearance prices and outside of that a variety of products in each section for every budget. We have been here several times since they open and theres always something new to see. This is one of those stores if youre looking for a place to look around and shop at but dont really know what you want to buy, great place to go. Pic of our new born when she still fit in the shopping basket at academy. We did not actually carry her in there, just for a funny picture Its been some time since they first opened and we visited yesterday July 12th (2026) because I had a coupon emailed to me. We were there for a specific stanley cup and I knew they'd have it in stock. They usually keep things pretty well stocked up and they had it. The store was clean and the staff was very kind and helpful. Will definitely be returning
